Cereal Bowl Variations
There are 2 distinct diameters of Currier & Ives cereal bowls. The smaller 6 3/8" diameter versions and the larger 6 1/2" version. Of the larger 6 1/2" version there are two distinct shapes, the standard narrow base and the quite scarce wide base. The larger bowls have a smaller center image than the smaller bowls. There are variations in the sizes of these center images. The normal center in a small bowl is 3" and the normal center in a large bowl is 2 7/8". There are a few variations in these center images that have been found. In the smaller bowl there is a slightly smaller image than the standard size. It can be distinguished by the missing right hand lower corner of the roof on the school house and a slight difference to the lower section of the very bottom ground line. There is a slightly larger center image found on some of the large bowls. The only way I have found to differentiate them is to actually measure them. I use the horizontal line that abuts the bottom of the school house roof as a guideline. On the standard bowls this measurement is 2 11/16" and on the scarcer wider variety it is 2 7/8".
There are a number of different backstamps and incised markings. These will be updated at a later date.
